Due to the particles of the surrounding glaciers that make their way into the lake, the water of Lake Pukaki reflects an unreal turquoise color. Combined with the stunning lake and the surrounding mountains, including Aorkai Mount Cook, you’ll be wondering how something like this could be reality. The landscape here is so fantastic, that its resemblance to Tolkien’s Middle Earth served as the background for several scenes in both the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films. If you happen to get to the lake after the sun sets, Pukaki and the surrounding area has strict light ordinances, which in turn allows for incredibly clear night skies and has made the area famous for star gazing as well.
