Surrounded by beach forest, this vast clear-water lake is the alpine star of the Nelson Lakes National Park.
Lake Rotoroa is the largest of eighteen lakes in the Nelson Lakes National Park, offering a variety of walking tracks in a stunning location. At its deepest the mountain lake is 145 metres and it covers a surface area of 54 hectares. It is surrounded by forested mountains which make for breathtaking views, and on a clear day the mountains and hills reflect in the transparent, calm waters for a truly picture-perfect setting, be that for a picnic at the end of the pier, or a walk on one of many nature trails through the native bush. The lake is a truly beautiful and peaceful place to get away from it all, with its fresh water, fresh air, an array of fish and birds, beech forests and shrubs. It’s a favourite spot for (cold!) swimming, trout fishing, and everything from short, relaxing track-walks to longer circuits for more serious hikers
