Peru
Ask locals in the region's most culturally important town what their favorite site is, and they'll probably say the incongruous Italian-style castle.
Lamas was founded in the 1430’s by Pocras and Hanan Chancas tribesmen fleeing the expanding Inca Empire. It's said that rather than conquering Lamas, the Spanish befriended the townsfolk, who were allowed to live in peace for much of its history. But tragedy struck in 2005, when the town was devastated by an earthquake. An Italian expat decided to erect the Castillo de Lamas to create jobs imperative for the livelihood of those impacted by the disaster. Although some may view the castle as a complete contradiction to the Peruvian culture, most of the locals absolutely love its ornate appearance. The town of Lamas itself is considered on of the most culturally significant settlements in the Peruvian Amazon, so it's well worth exploring if you're interested in traditional handicrafts and native culture.
