Peru
A stunningly beautiful colonial church hides a macabre tomb commemorating its most famous son.
Lampa is famous throughout Peru for its dusty rose-red buildings, which earned it the nickname “The Pink City”. During the Colonial era, the town was an important commercial center, and the Spanish influence remains visible to this day. The town's pride and joy is the Iglesia de Santiago Apostol, which houses the self-designed tomb of the engineer and politician Enrique Torres Belón his wife. The tomb is lined with hundreds of skulls and bones exhumed from the local cemetery and crypt so that Belón and his wife could rest in peace in the presence of their ancestors. Topping the macabre mausoleum is an exact replica of Michelanglo’s Pietà, made from cast aluminum.
