In the late 1880s, William Larnach built Larnach Castle as an expansive holiday home with 43 rooms, and decadent features like glass imported from Venice and a 3000 square foot ballroom. Larnach named the place, “The Camp” but was coined as a ‘castle’ by the local press. Unfortunately, due to setbacks in his financial and personal life, Larnach commit suicide in 1898. Due to legal issues, the Larnach family was forced to sell the castle, and is now owned by the Barker family. The Barker family has restored the house to its former glory and have even made some of the most stunning gardens in New Zealand. With the love and care Barker family have put into this property, it is pretty clear William Larnach’s curse has been lifted. Tours Of the castle can be booked in advance and range in price depending on what kind of tour and the ages of the participants.
