Cuba
Enjoy beautiful natural surroundings and a charming village in the heart of a UNESCO Biosphere.
Las Terrazas (literally “The Terraces”) was created in 1968 as part of Fidel Castro’s “Green Revolution''. He enlisted architect Osmany Cienfuegos to build 1,360km of terraces, a self-sustaining community, and plant some 7 million trees. In 1985, the area became Cuba’s first UNESCO Biosphere, and since the mid-90s, has been one of the island’s most beloved natural retreats. Today, you have a wealth of ways to enjoy the natural surroundings. There’s a mile-long zipline course that will take you over the village (they won’t let you on if you’ve been drinking), a number of hiking trails, and horseback riding. Or if you prefer something more relaxing, you can sit back by Lago San Juan or the San Juan River. No matter which you choose, keep your eyes open for the many bird species. You can also tour Cafetal Buenavista, Cuba’s oldest plantation, the lakeside home of renowned folk singer Polo Montañez, or visit a number of local artists’ workshops. Please note: the cost of any activities is not included in the stop price.
