Latvia
An enormous piece of the old-country has been preserved in one of Europe’s largest open-air museums.
Establishment in 1924, the Latvian Ethnographic Open Air Museum is one of the oldest and largest outdoor museums in Europe. Nestled in a peaceful pine forest on the shore of Lake Jugla, the museum has collected 118 historic buildings from all of Latvia’s regions. Every building on the farmstead is fully furnished with the traditional furnishings and tools of the region, period, and location to give visitors an intimate look at the elements of rural life. During the summer, the museum is brought to life by folk artisans, such as potters, weavers, blacksmiths, and woodworkers, who showcase their traditional crafts, and even let visitors try their hand at these time-honored traditions. While visitors are free to explore the museum on their own, it’s also possible to book a guided tour to learn even more about the history of the buildings and Latvia’s rural heritage.
