Lichtenstein Castle

Nicknamed ‘Neuschwanstein’s little brother’, nineteenth-century Lichtenstein Castle stands an impressive 2600 feet above sea level perched on the edge of the Swabian Alps in Germany.

About

This Neo-Gothic castle was built in 1840-1842 based on the novel ‘Lichtenstein’ by Wilhelm Hauff after the original castle built in 1200 was destroyed several times and eventually lapsed into ruin. The castle complex comprises other nineteenth-century buildings, a chapel, a large garden and the romantic courtyard. The bedchambers of the count reflect the opulent grandeur of the period when the castle was built while the well-preserved weapons and artifacts tell the castle's history as a hunting lodge. What the castle lacks in size, it more than makes up for with its superb views of the valley, dotted with long-extinct volcanoes that are now covered in lush greenery. This not so well known castle is the ideal location for those who fancy a spot of sight-seeing without the hordes of tourists that can sometimes be found at the more popular castles. There is also a castle restaurant for those in need of refreshment.
