Latvia
Renowned for its beautiful beach, this port city is a captivating mixture of grit and refinement.
Founded by the Livonian Order in the 13th century, Liepāja remained a relatively small settlement the late 1800s, when Tsar Alexander III deepened the harbour and built a massive naval port. In the 20th century, the city was home to the first Baltic fleet of Soviet submarines, and a major military base. Today, Liepāja is fascinatingly incongruous. The port city is also home to one of the country’s most beautiful Blue Flag beaches. Visitors will be able to admire elegant timber houses and Art Nouveau masterpieces, and explore the pragmatic remains of the former military port, or see the world’s largest mechanical organ in the beautiful Baroque Holy Trinity Cathedral. While exploring the streets, visitors are sure to notice the many fresh fish stalls - the city’s famous for its fresh seafood, particularly cod, so be sure to give some a try.
