Lier Begijnhof

One of the most charming quarters in the country, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was home to a community of women until the 1990s.

About

Founded in the 13th century, lay women looking to live a positive life separate from the church flocked to the Lier Begijnhof. Over the centuries, the community continued to grow, and today is an entire neighborhood comprising of mostly 17th and 18th century houses. Visitors enter the Beguine through a 17th century Renaissance portico, crowned by a statue of St. Begga, after which a grid of narrow paved alleys bring visitors back in time. The charming cottages that make up the Lier Begijnhof bear distinctive names like "Flight to Egypt" or "Five Small Wounds" to reflect their unique styles. At the heart of the community stands a stately 17th century Baroque church, crowned by an 18th century lantern turret.
