Lithuania
All of Lithuania’s regions are represented in one of Europe’s largest ethnographic museums.
Founded in 1966 on the idyllic shores of the Kaunas Lagoon, this open-air museum spans a whopping 195 hectares, and depicts traditional Lithuanian life between the 18th century and the first half of the 20th century through the buildings’ architecture and furnishings. Inside the traditional structures, period correct household appliances, agricultural machinery, and crafting tools can be found. The museum’s centerpiece is a town featuring buildings from all over Lithuania typical to different time periods with all the expected elements, such as a market square with natural stone paving, church, inn, and the houses of craftsmen. The museum also hosts the Exile and Resistance Movement Exhibition to commemorate the most tragic period in the Lithuanian history, complete with a train wagon used to transport deportees, a bunker and memorial monuments.
