Founded in 1548, by Field Marshal Alonso de Mercadillo and one of the oldest cities in Ecuador, the city was fortified due to its proximity to gold areas and served as a departure point for the Amazon basin. In addition, Loja is unique because it is the first city in Ecuador to be wired for electric power by an advanced hydroelectric dam that was completed in the 1890s.
