Loja

This colorful colonial city is known for its artistic and musical tradition, which has led to its name as the Music and Cultural Capital of Ecuador.

About

Founded in 1548, by Field Marshal Alonso de Mercadillo and one of the oldest cities in Ecuador, the city was fortified due to its proximity to gold areas and served as a departure point for the Amazon basin. In addition, Loja is unique because it is the first city in Ecuador to be wired for electric power by an advanced hydroelectric dam that was completed in the 1890s. Take a stroll through the streets and pop into various music and salsa clubs, and gaze upon local artworks; massive painted tile murals and frescoes. Additionally, there are various monuments, churches, and beautiful structures which will keep you busy for various hours.
