This twelfth-century Gothic castle is now a national monument and is one of the oldest and most valuable historical stone castles in the Czech lands.
If slightly scary and imposing medieval castles are your thing then look no further than Loket Castle, a stunning example of Gothic architecture that overlooks the postcard-pretty town of Loket. The castle comprises a warren of passages, staircases and interconnecting rooms containing a porcelain museum, weaponry, armor, and an eclectic collection of historic artifacts along with dungeons displaying some of the rather gruesome techniques and equipment used in the days when the castle doubled as a prison. In contrast, check out the impressive chapel and the castle’s ceremonial hall. Known as the ‘Impregnable Castle of Bohemia’ in medieval times due to its incredibly thick walls, the castle became a Gothic stronghold as demonstrated by the magnificent 85 feet high castle lookout tower that nowadays provides exhilarating views from all four sides over the town, the river, and the surrounding countryside. A stop-off that appeals to all ages.
