Loviisa is a charming little darling town with its provincial charm and seaside location
When Loviisa was founded in 1745, it was a fortress town on the Russian border, guarded by not one, but two bastions. Over the years, it's also been known as a spa town, and in the 20th century, home to Finland's first nuclear power plant. Despite its more recent industrial development, Loviisa's Old Town still epitomizes the charm of rural Finland. The streets are still lined with painted wood houses, many of which open their doors to guests during the “Historical Houses of Loviisa” event in August. The 17th century annex of Degerby Farm, which are some of the oldest wooden buildings in Finland are a particular highlight. Then there's the charming red brick church, and the Commandant's House museum. You can also walk the ruins of the Loviisa fortress, or take a ferry (15EUR return ticket) to Svartholma fortress. If you need to stretch your legs further, follow the Myllyharju nature trail for some breathtaking views of the Gulf of Finland.
