The colorful and quirky Lugang old town is filled with hidden alleyways and mysterious natural beauty.
The old town of Lugang (or Lukang) allows visitors to step back into the past and explore what was once a major economic and cultural center. In its heyday, the city’s harbor was a central site for the game trade, hence its name translating to “Deer's harbor.” Today, the town is known among travelers for its colorful labyrinth-like crisscrossing alleyways, which are as exciting to explore as they are photogenic. This ancient town is also home to the famous Molu Lane, or “chest touching” alley, a narrow passageway between two rows of old-world houses with just enough space for one person at a time to walk through. There is also an abundance of vibrantly colored temples here, and subsequently, the city is famous for its plethora of Buddhist crafts and handiworks. The mountainous scenery surrounding Lugang is breathtaking and offers hiking opportunities.
