Lund

Boasting the finest Romanesque cathedral in the country and a charming historic quarter, this medieval town still has a lively atmosphere courtesy of its prestigious university.

About

Settled by the Danes in the early 11th century, Lund was the seat of the largest archbishopric in all of Europe through the Middle Ages. The 11th century cathedral reflects this status, and is considered the finest piece of Romanesque architecture in the country, with a wealth of medieval art and architecture, including an astronomical clock from 1380. The entire historic quarter next to the cathedral is now an open air museum, where you can walk down cobbled streets, and step into some of the larger historic building which now serve as museums and galleries. This eventually gives way to Lund’s university-run botanical garden, which has its roots in the 17th century and has 7,000 species of flora in its eight-hectare grounds, including 200 kept in a greenhouse. The unique Museum of Sketches for Public Art showcases preliminary sketches and models by over 1,000 artists from 30 different countries, offering a glimpse into the creative process.
