Sand is slowly filling this abandoned waterpark by the sea.
Built around 1991, a string of financial mishaps forced the once-popular Macassar Beach Pavilion to shutter its doors. Left to the merciless South-Easter winds, shifting sands have consumed the park, filling waterslides, concession stands, and changing rooms with sand. The paint is peeled and faded, broken glass and tiles litter the ground, and the walls are scrawled with graffiti, and everywhere there is sand. This juxtaposition has made the Macassar Beach Pavilion popular with photographers, who come here to capture the power on nature and transience of man. The pavilion is within the 2,700 acre Macassar Dunes Reserve, which provides plenty more stunning natural scenery, such as the last forest of white milkwood trees in the city.
