Tunisia
Tunisia’s medieval capital is a cultural treasure-trove by the sea.
Mahdia originated as the Roman city Aphrodisium, which was later known as Africa. Along with (possibly) giving its name to the entire continent, the was notably the first capital of the Fatimid dynasty, who would go on to rule Egypt and Syria. The city’s strategic location made it a frequent target for attack over the centuries, though its robust fortifications allowed many of its historic monuments to survive to this day. The historic medina, situated on a promontory, is accessed via the monumental Skifa Kahla (“black gate”). Built in 916, the gate is attached to the town museum for those looking to learn more about its rich history. The medina is lined with charming, traditional buildings, and its souks are an excellent place to haggle over some of the town’s famed textiles. Mahdia’s Great Mosque, built in the 10th century, is a fascinating architectural anomaly, being inspired by Roman temples rather than traditional Islamic architecture.
