Sweden
Historic charms and modern innovation mesh seamlessly in this hip seaside city.
Founded in the late 13th century, Malmö has since grown into Sweden’s 3rd largest city. The cobbled streets and historic buildings of the charming Old Town (Gamla Staden) look much as they did centuries ago, except now, the buildings house funky galleries, trendy boutiques, and hip cafés, especially in the Lilla Torg neighborhood, which lies just south of the city’s oldest square and the 14th century Saint Peter’s Church, which has some of the finest late-medieval paintings in Scandinavia. Nearby, hidden in an old tenement building, is the Form/Design Center, which celebrates modern art, design, and architecture. Equally unique is the 16th century Malmöhus Castle, which isn’t just the oldest preserved Renaissance castle in Scandinavia - it houses multiple museums and an aquarium! North of this is the trendy Western Harbour neighborhood, which is run entirely off sustainable energy and is watched over by the towering “Turning Torso”.
