Manavi Fortress

Standing proudly atop a high mountain, this fortress’s history remained obscure until the early 18th century, when crumbling ruins transformed into a grand palace.

About

Believed to have been built in the 10th or 11th century, Manavi Fortress represents a significant center during the feudal era of Kakheti. A citadel on elevated ground and a lower fortress to the east comprise the castle’s two sections, and it boasts four towers and panoramic views of the surrounding area. Within its walls, three churches—dedicated to the Virgin and St. George—stand as testimonies to its religious significance. Its position commands views of the valley in both directions for nearly 10-15 kilometers, creating an awesome site to contemplate the conflicts and marauding attacks that ravaged the castle in the late 11th century. Manavi Church stands as the main attraction, featuring a small one-dome structure with well-preserved frescoes, paintings, and ancient icons that can be perused every day from 9AM to 6PM, with admission limited during the liturgy.
