Ecuador
For a few short days around January, the Guayacan trees here bloom with impossibly vibrant yellow flowers.
Located in an arid, desert-like region, Mangahurco sees almost no rain for 9 months of the year. When the sky finally opens, the waters catalyze one of the country’s most amazing natural spectacles: the blooming of the Guayacan trees. During the dry season, the trees are completely bare, so seeing the entire valley erupt in an explosion of yellow flowers is the type of sight people drop everything to go see. Because the blooming is entirely weather dependent, you’ll want to keep an eye on the status of the Guayacanes - when not in bloom, the area really is like a desert.
