Greece
The 10-meter high hillock rising from this unassuming plain is actually an ancient Greek tomb.
In 490 BCE, the citizens of Athens faced off against the invading Persians on the field of Marathons. Though greatly outnumbered, the Greeks decimated the Persian army, halting King Darius I's plans to subjugate Greece. The 192 Athenians who fell in battle, rather than being returned to their families for private burial, where honored by being cremated and placed in a collective tomb. Today, visitors can see the tomb as well as learn from information tables about the place and the battle itself.
