Set amid the beautiful greenery of the hilly Karlovy Vary region, Mariánské Lázně, or Marienbad as it was formerly known, is an utterly charming, elegant, and revitalizing spot.
Dissolutes, dukes, writers and poets refreshed themselves with Marianske Lazne's curative spa waters throughout the Nineteenth Century/ Perhaps most famously Goethe, who, heartbroken by a moody Baroness, composed his Marienbad Elegy here. Its romantic colonnades, pavilions, cafes, and snug hotels, all promote light-heartedness and enjoyment of the moment. Though there are plenty of spots to compose a heart-rending poem too, if the mood takes you. The Ambrose Spring, the 'Spring of Love' perhaps, or the Rudolph Spring whose water can be drunk directly from the wooden pavilion. If verse composition eludes you try the inspirational Singing Fountain in the town's iconic Colonnade. Designed by academic architect Pavel Mišík, the fountain, embedded with coloured lights, plays its jets of water to a varied program of classical and contemporary music.
