Marksburg Castle

This castle’s impressive fortifications weathered 1000 years of strife, making it the only castle along the Rhine to not be captured or destroyed.

About

Starting as a keep in the 12th century, Marksburg was continually expanded and improved, culminating in the impressive structure seen today. For fortification fans, the tall central tower, with its unique square base and round extension, is a striking example of a bergfried, which was designed primarily for defensive purposes. Its heavy fortifications must have worked as the only noteworthy damage the castle sustained came at the hands of American artillery in World War II.. Today, its hilltop position offers spectacular views of the Rhine valley, and the interior houses an extensive museum, with fully equipped torture chamber. The headquarters of the German Castles Association, whose main task is the protection and preservation of castles and stately homes, is also in Marksburg Castle.
