The Matsieng Footprints were carved between 3,000 and 10,000 years ago to tell the story of great hunter Matsieng, who may or may not have had one leg, emerged from a waterhole, followed by animals, and then people, and lead them to settle in the surrounding lands. The 170 carving of human and animal footprints, as well as animal shapes preserve this tradition. For thousands of years, people have been coming to the natural basis to collect water and water their animals (the latter a practice that only recently stopped), and to this day it remains an important site for rain-making ceremonies and other rituals.
