Malta
A fortified city in the Northern Region of Malta, once an ancient capital, harbors breathtaking views and centuries-old buildings.
Founded in the 8th century, Mdina was Malta’s capital from ancient times to the medieval period and has now become a quiet, historically significant retreat. Located on a hilltop with stunning views of Malta and surrounded by tall bastion fortifications, the city is a well-preserved treasure filled with centuries-old buildings. A ditch surrounding the bastion walls has been transformed into a charming public garden, and the streets inside the city are paved with large stones and cobbles. Hear the clip-clop sound of horse-drawn carriages through the city as you explore the impressive St. Paul’s Cathedral and chapels lining the narrow streets. For magnificent views of the eastern part of Malta, head to the bastion at Triq is-Sur, a peaceful spot to enjoy the city’s tranquility and scenery. Close to the Main Gate, you’ll find the Mdina Dungeons, an intriguing museum showcasing underground passageways, chambers and cells that recreate the dark events that transpired within these walls over the decades.
