A religious and cultural center for thousands of years, archaeologists consider this one of Europe's finest lost cities.
Standing on a cliff-top, 470 meters high, the Perperikon was first settled around 5000 BC. By 1500 BC, the site had developed to the point that it's been nicknamed "the European Machu Picchu" or "the Stone Pompeii" by archaeologists. The city is complete with buildings, rooms, streets, and squares and overall the settlement is remarkably well-preserved. Today, visitors can step into this ancient settlement, to walk the well-preserved streets, examining the remains of houses and squares belonging to the lost civilization. The site is accessible only on foot from a nearby parking lot, located about 700 meters below the site.
