Likely of Roman origins, this picturesque town overlooking the waters of Lake Como has long been an important stop for trade and travel between Lombardy and north of the Alps. During the middle ages, the town was encircled by defensive walls, which there is still evidence of today. The historic upper part of town has retained its medieval look, and is lined with shops selling local products, while the Church of Santa Marta houses exquisite artwork dating back to the 16th century. However, the town’s main draw is its elegant promenade, which runs along the lakefront. Here visitors are treated to stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains, as well as the city’s scenic architecture.
