Mexico
Learn all about Mexico’s native turtles at this beachside conservation center.
The Mexican Turtle Center opened in the little beach town of Mazunte in 1991 as a way to make amends for the former turtle slaughterhouse that devastated the local sea turtle population, while still supporting the local economy. Every species of marine turtle found in Mexico, as well as 6 species of river turtle, and 2 types of native land turtles are housed in large outdoor tanks, aquariums, and terrariums here. A guide will educate you about each species as well as the center’s conservation work to repopulate the critically endangered sea turtles. If you visit between March and November, you might be lucky enough to see the baby turtles released into the wild! The Mexican Turtle Center is open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and Sundays from 10 to 2:30 p.m. Please note: the entrance fee of 38MXN is not included.
