New Zealand
This historic town is a great place to connect with the area's gold-mining heritage.
At more than 150 years old, Milton is a small rural town steeped in history dating back to the 1860’s. Originally founded as a milling town, it is home to the McGills Flour Mill and the Bruce Wollen Mill. It grew during the gold rush years due to its proximity to the town where gold was first discovered in New Zealand. It became a stopping point for people journeying to the Tuapeka Goldfields, and the towns’ Old Sod Cottage was a sanctuary for miners and has been restored and well-maintained for visitors to gain an insight into how people lived back then. The Tokomairiro Church with its impressive gothic architecture sits in the center of town and is the most prominent and recognisable building in Milton. Many of Milton’s streets are named after British writers and poets, so expect to see nods to Shakespeare, Chaucer and Burns to name just a few!
