This breathtaking canyon was formed millions of years ago by tectonic activity
The Miradores del Canon del Sumidero overlook a deep canyon formed millions over years ago through a combination of erosion and tectonic activity. At 1 to 2 kilometers across, and up to 1000 meters deep, the Canon del Sumidero is Mexico’s “other” grand canyon. Overlooking the canyon are viewpoints that showcase its natural beauty from varying altitudes. The first is the La Ceiba viewpoint, from which you can see the city of Chiapa de Corzo and where the walls of the Sumidero Canyon begin to take shape. The El Tepehuaje viewpoint overlooks the picturesque bend in the river Grijalva amidst the dense jungle. The Los Chiapa Viewpoint is at the canyon’s highest point, and according to legend, is where locals threw themselves to their deaths rather than be subjected by the Spanish.
