According to Maori legend, these ‘eel baskets’ and ‘gourds’ washed ashore after a voyaging canoe crashed, but a little more had to happen to form these boulders.
Near the town of Moeraki, there is Koekohe Beach, which is home to the famous Moeraki Boulders. These boulders were formed and emerged over millions of years, made of silt, mud, and clay, hardened together and calcified. They are extremely large ranging from about .05-2.2 meters (1.6-7.2 ft), even the largest being about 3 meters (10ft) in diameter. Not only their size is impressive, but just how spherical they are. Maori legend says that these large boulders were eel baskets, among other superstitions, that washed ashore from a canoe wreck. There are a few other locations where these boulders can be found, but the ones at Koekohe Beach are very well known and visited by locals and tourists alike.
