The culture of Mombasa is nearly impossible to reduce to a single concept. Centuries of influence from Portugal, India, Arabia and Africa have left it in chaos, but in this chaos there is still a sense of order, as any visitor can find something which suits them. In the Old Town, visit Fort Jesus, an old stronghold of the first Portuguese rule in the 1500s (also a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Peruse the city’s many bazaars for souvenir shopping, or to discover a treasure trove of local goods. But of course, don’t forget that this is a city of beaches - check out Bamburi and Shanzu beaches specifically for clean swimming and scenic beauty.
