At one of the region's oldest monasteries, a devout nun had here dream of meeting a long-dead monk fulfilled.
Built in the 10th century, making it one of Athens' oldest monasteries, Nea Makri was attacked by the Turks, who killed many of the monks. One of them was Saint Ephraim, after whom the monastery was later named. A thousand years later, the devout nun Makaria visited ruins. Feeling a special energy, she decided cleaning and restore the ruins. After praying to meet the holy monks who once lived here, a voice from within guided her to the exact spot to dig. In January 1950, she exhumed Ephraim's body, fulfilling her dream to meet him. Ever since, the monastery is a famous pilgrimage stop for Orthodox faithful, who come to see the Saint's body on display.
