Tunisia
The birthplace of Tunisia’s first president, this resort city is watched over by a medieval fort, which famously appeared in Monty Python’s Life of Brian.
Founded on the ruins of the Punic–Roman city of Ruspina, Monastir was an important Islamic bastion before the city transformed into a fishing port, and more recently, a beach resort town. The well-preserved Ribat of Monastir, built in the 7th century, is one of the oldest Arabic fortresses in North Africa. Originally built to defend against the attacks of the Byzantine fleet, it’s better known as a filming location for the miniseries Jesus of Nazareth, and Monty Python's Life of Brian. The watchtower offers panoramic views of the coast and town, while the former prayer hall is now an Islamic Arts Museum. Monastir is notably the birthplace of Habib Bourguiba, the founder of modern Tunisia, who’s remembered by both the Habib Bourguiba Mosque, and his grand mausoleum. Monastir's medina has been carefully restored, and while it’s lost much of its down-at-the-heel attitude, its souk streets are overflowing with shopping opportunities.
