This charming lakeside town with its UNESCO-listed pile dwellings was featured in The Sound of Music.
Mondsee's earliest, prehistoric settlers lived above the lake waters in houses built on stilts. These prehistoric pile dwellings have be preserved and recreated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site that gives visitors insight into the culture of ancient man. The beautiful lake and charming town are loved by the people of Salzburg, who often come here on weekend trips. Of the town's historic monuments, the medieval Abbey is probably the only one that's recognizable to people around the world, though you might not know it by name. It was here, in front of the skeleton-filled altar, that Maria and Captain Georg von Trapp, were married in the Oscar-winning Sound of Music.
