This eccentric summer palace overlooking the Mediterranean is surrounded by a lush park that’s open to visitors.
Montaza Palace was established by Khedive Abbas II in 1892 as a hunting lodge and residence for his companion. In 1932, King Fuad I added the even larger Al-Haramlik Palace and royal gardens to the Montaza Palace grounds. This summer palace is a distinctive blend of Ottoman and Florentine architecture, with an elaborate Italian Renaissance tower rising high above the arcaded manor. Today, the palace houses a museum dedicated to the Muhammad Ali Dynasty, where you can learn about the family’s history and admire their collection of objects d'art, while the older Salamlek Palace is now a hotel. The 150 acre royal gardens are a pleasant place to stroll with lush greenery, a semi-private beach, and a quirky Victorian-style bridge leading to a small island of pylons.
