The Monte Palace Madeira Tropical Garden is a living tapestry of nature's marvels and artistic brilliance, a must-visit for its exotic flora, exquisite art, and panoramic views over Funchal's bay
Unfurling over 17 acres on the hilltop of Funchal's bay, the Monte Palace Madeira Tropical Garden boasts an abundant collection of exotic plants from every corner of the world, is home to the centenary cycads, revered as living fossils, and countless other unique species. The serenity of the garden is further enhanced by the freely roaming swans, ducks, peacocks, and chickens, while the central lake, populated with these majestic creatures, adds an enchanting tranquility to the landscape. The Monte Palace Madeira is not just a garden; it's an art space. The museum within the property showcases over a thousand African sculptures from the period of 1966 to 1969 in an exhibition titled 'African Passion'. Another exhibition, 'Mother Nature's Secrets', displays an impressive private collection of minerals and gems, predominantly from Brazil, Portugal, South Africa, Zambia, Peru, Argentina, and North America. A noteworthy feature of the Monte Palace Madeira is its collection of tile panels. Acquired by José Berardo and considered one of the most important in the country, these Hispano-Moorish tiles from the 15th and 16th centuries and Portuguese panels from the 16th to the 20th centuries add a historical richness to your walk through the lush garden. A tip for your visit: remember to savor the sweet Madeira wine at the café in the south of the park, a delightful treat included with your park entry. The standard entrance fee is €12.50 for adults and €6.00 for children aged 4-15, while children under 4 enter free.
