Italy
The Regional Park of Monte Sole offers more than just great hiking trails and and stunning views. It also provides an insight into one of WWII's darkest moments.
Monte Sole and the park covers over 6,300 hectares in between mountains, the Reno River, and the Setta stream. This small chain of mountains and park are located in the Bologna region of northern Italy. This park is protected due to its ample wildlife, green grass, and extremely diverse survey of almost 1,000 floral species. But there's a deeper side to this park's beauty. It also serves as a remembrance to the lives lost in WWII. During the fall of 1944, German Nazi soldiers massacred over 700 women and children in this peaceful park. In these rolling hills, many innocent lives were ended for helping partisans in the area. Today, there are beautiful ruins, adorned burials, detailed tours, and monuments dedicated to this tragic part of history. Take a solemn moment to remember where we've been and much further we still have to go at the Regional Park of Monte Sole.
