Built on the edge of one of Montenegro’s most beautiful waterfalls, it goes without saying that this monastery has a spectacular setting. The journey there, through sheer cliffs, deep gorges, and hairpin turns instils an appreciation of the country’s natural beauty. Founded in 1252, the monastery’s interior is covered in frescoes dating back to 13th century, and is used as inspiration for local art students. The gardens surrounding the monastery help keep the monks self sufficient, growing fruits and vegetables, and harvesting honey from colourful beehives. The cold water fountain water to offers refreshment for the thirsty, with many people taking a filled water bottle with them.
