Barbados
As one of the largest and the only functioning sugar windmills still standing in the Caribbean, this landmark educates visitors on sugarcane cultivation in Barbados
Morgan Lewis Windmill, located in St. Andrew Parish, is the largest and only fully functional sugar windmill in the Caribbean. The mill was actively used in the 18th and 19th centuries but ceased operations in the mid-twentieth century. In the 1960s, the mill was designated for preservation as a museum. Having been restored but with all its original working parts intact, the mill is still capable of grinding cane and producing cane juice on occasion. Inside, there's a museum dedicated to the sugar mill and plantation, featuring artifacts and an exhibition of historic photographs. Visitors can ascend to the very top of the mill, where a panoramic view unfolds, showcasing the scenic east coast of the island and its lush surroundings. An artisanal cafe is open on the grounds. The site is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, and is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Admission to the grounds and cafe is free. Self-guided tours are $10 BBD, while guided tours are $20 BBD. For more details, visit https://barbadosnationaltrust.com/morgan-lewis/.
