Geometric red bricks contrast with green plains at this tranquil Romanesque medieval abbey.
Situated on the banks of a small river, this quiet abbey was founded in 1134 as a daughter house of the now ruined Morimond Abbey near Dijon. The simple Romanesque architecture with pseudo-Gothic elements offers visitors and abbots alike a place of peaceful respite. Inside, the mighty pillars supporting the basilica’s aisles are topped with vaulted ceilings. The dark wooden furniture in the choir is a prime example of Bramante’s promotion of Renaissance style in Northern Italy. A visit to the abbey museum educates guests on life in the Middle Ages, including food, cooking, energy, and water.
