Albania
Once one of the most important cities in the Balkans, only a handful of beautifully frescoed churches remain from this mountain village’s glory days.
Moscopole dates back to the early 14th century, and over the years, grew to be one of the most important cities in the Balkans. It was home to the 2nd printing press in the Ottoman Empire, and at its height, 25 churches catered to its population of 30,000. After being destroyed on several occasions between the end of the 18th century through World War II, the city was reduced to a small mountain village. Today, only 5 churches remain from the old city, and these are on the World Monuments Fund watch. Clearly marked on the tourist map, they offer a combined 43,000 square feet of vibrant frescoes on their walls and ceilings.
