Portugal
This untouched beach is far from the touristy crowds and is a highlight of the town of Moisteros, fringed by lava rock formations.
Situated in a small fishing village called Mosteiros, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and lush greenery, Mosteiros Beach is a unique and picturesque getaway. It’s known for its iconic black sand, which is a result of volcanic activity in the region. Sheltered from the wind with calm waves, the beach is the perfect spot for a relaxing swim and moment of reprieve on the sand. It’s naturally photogenic, as blue waves crash onto jet black sand, and islets dot the horizon. The large rock formations that can be spotted from the beach appear to look like a church, hence the English translation of Mosteiros to “monastery”. Head to a vendor selling snacks, ice creams and refreshments, and spend some quality time in a destination not yet overrun by huge crowds. With the water of the Atlantic remaining pretty cold all year round, plan your trip depending on your preference for a gorgeous sun-drenched trip or a more overcast, moody and visually striking atmosphere.
