Uganda
Within one of these traditional reed-roofed tombs lies one of Uganda’s greatest national heroes.
The Mparo Tombs are the final resting place of the Bunyoro king Omukama (‘King’) Chwa II Kabalega and his son. In the late 19th century, Kabalega led his people against the British and the Ottoman colonialists, and until he was finally defeated and exiled to Seychelles in 1899. Under the thatch-roofed dome, you can see his spears, bowls, throne, and other personal effects displayed above Kabalega’s resting place. Also keep an eye out for the recurring number 9, which is considered good luck in local culture.
