Munster

The site where the Thirty Years' War was put to rest, Germany's bicycle capital has a long and strange history.

About

Well established by 793, when Charlemagne sent out Ludger as a missionary to evangelise the region, Münster has been an important hub for centuries. In 1534, the Anabaptists took control of the city, claimed all property, burned all books except the Bible, and required all citizens be naked. When, the town was recaptured in 1535, the Anabaptists were tortured to death, and their corpses displayed in the metal baskets hanging from St. Lambert's Church. The 13th century St. Paul's Cathedral has an astronomical clock that plays a Glockenspiel tune at noon. The city’s most notable landmark is the 14th century, Gothic Town Hall, where the Treaty of Westphalia was signed in 1648 - part of which is on display inside, along with portraits of the participants. For something more modern, the Pablo Picasso Museum of Graphic Art, is devoted exclusively to the graphic works of Pablo Picasso, and his contemporaries.
