Tourism helps protect this stunning cascade where the Nile rushes through a narrow gorge from development.
At Murchison Falls, the White Nile is forced into a rocky gorge less than 10 meters wide, where it drops 43 meters. The power eruption of water is one of the standout attractions in Uganda’s famed Murchison Falls National Park. Ernest Hemingway crashed his plane nearby while trying to visit the falls with his wife in 1954, though the British royal family had much more successful visits. In 2019 South Africa’s Bonang Power and Energy proposed building a hydropower station on the river, but this was rejected by Uganda as the falls are one of the country’s most lucrative tourism sites. So along with getting to enjoy a stunning natural spectacle, your visit to the falls helps protect the entire surrounding ecosystem. Please note that due to the extensive wildlife conservation efforts, the park charges an admission fee upon entry, $40 for adults and $20 for children.
