Learn about life in the trenches and the horrors of the great war at the site of some of the fiercest fighting.
The Battle of the Sommes, one of the bloodiest battles in human history, wiped the town of Albert off the map. Today, housed in a series of 13th century tunnels that were transformed into a World War II bomb shelter, a series of exhibits shed light on everyday life in the trenches. Visitors will see recreations of the trenches of the different combatants, as well as tableaus of an infirmary, downtime, and attack. Along with exhibits of artefacts from the Great War, ranging from grenades to trench art, visitors can also learn about some of the most distinguished figures of the battle in the Gallery of Heroes. Nearby, the 100-foot-deep Lochnagar Crater, the largest created during the war, is now a memorial site surrounded by educational panels.
