Cuba
Step back in time at the centerpiece of Cuba’s UNESCO-listed coffee-growing region.
Museo Cafetal La Isabelica was originally a coffee plantation founded in the 19th century by French immigrants from Haiti. After slavery was abolished, the plantation was abandoned, only to be reborn into an educational center representing the 171 coffee plantations that once dotted the landscape, and are now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking the complex, you’ll find workshops with period tools, antique coffee processing machinery, and the spartan slave quarters. Since there are no informative signs, we’d recommend hiring a guide if one is available (and have some cash on hand to tip!).
