Brazil
Get a glimpse into the life and work of one of Brazil’s greatest artists in his mural-filled home.
The Casa de Portinari Museum preserves the private story of Candido Portinari, one of Brazil’s most prolific sacred artists. The son of humble Italian immigrants, Portinari left home at 15 to study art at National Fine Arts School in Rio de Janeiro. In the following years, he quickly garnered national and international attention, painting murals for government buildings and projects, and exhibiting at MoMA, the Detroit Art Institute, and museums and galleries around the world. By the time of his death, Portinari had produced some 5,000 works, most with religious themes or scenes from his homeland. In his well-preserved home, you’ll find walls decorated with murals and frescoes, as well as draughts, drawings, and watercolors. But more than just a survey of his work, the rooms are filled with his personal items and furnishings, offering a look into the private life of this beloved artist.
